Oh, you wanted ENTOmology-man.

One of my favorite comic strips is Randall Munroe’s xkcd. I suspect he’s a kindred spirit. Etymology Man made two appearances in his strip. The latter one where those battling a giant insect find they have summoned the wrong superhero.

So, what is etymology? The dictionary says that it is the facts relating to the origin of a particular word. The Oxford English Dictionary dates it to 1398. The etymology of etymology is that the term traveled up from Greek through Latin and French into English. It’s always been a word that means what it means.

As for entomology, as xkcd’s Etymology Man explains, it comes from the Greek meaning segmented. Well, close. It comes from ἔντομος, meaning cut up. That refers to the segments in the bodies of insects. In fact, insect has the same origin if you trace it back through its etymological path.

So be careful what you ask for. Etymology Man may arrive when you least expect him.
